Calabria / Tropea

Tropea and Capo Vaticano are located alongside the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. This area is also called “the coast of gods”, because of the beauty of the landscape and the magnificent view. You can see the sun go down behind the volcano the ‘Stromboli’. With clear weather you can see the Aeolian Islands, and even Sicily.

This part of Calabria is much loved by the Italians for its beautiful beaches. In the months July and Augustus there is plenty of entertainment. In spring and autumn it is an oasis of peace and quiet where you can enjoy the beautiful beaches.

Tropea

Tropea is the most touristic city of Calabria, and is also called the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city is located on a rock above sea level and the beautiful city centre has been preserved well. There are a lot of sights for entertainment. You should definitely visit the monastery Santa Maria dell’Isola, placed on top of a rock and stands for the symbol of Tropea. With bright and clear weather you have a great view over the sea almost 60 kilometres away to the Aeolian islands with the clearly recognisable volcano on the island Stromboli. Also the cathedral, the Duomo, is worth a visit.

Pizzo

Pizzo Calabro is a picturesque coastal village that features a nice city centre. The origin of this city is medieval and you can see this from the buildings and narrow alleys that lead to the sea. In the old part of the city you can find the 15th century castle Castello Murat. On the edge of Pizzo you can find the little church named Piedigrotta, it was carved out of tuff by men who had been shipwrecked as a way to say thanks for surviving the wreckage. The tartufo ice cream that consists of truffle chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream and a core of dark chocolate originally came from Pizzo. People still prepare the tartufo according to the traditional recipe.

Lago Angitola

The nature lover really cannot miss a visit to the Angitola-lake established as a nature reserve by the WWF. The lake has a circumference of 196 hectare and has been declared to be a zone of international importance as, among other, natural habitat of water birds. The lake is easily accessible from Capo Vaticano.

Zungri

Zungri is located at a elevation of 571 metre on the north side of the Poro plateau, about a 15 minute drive from Capo Vaticano. It is one of the most important agricultural centres of this area. The rocky village dates back from the 12th-14th century and almost holds a hundred cave houses. The walls of these houses are decorated and still show where the beds and closets were. You can find this settlement in a suburb of Zungri, near the centre. A visit to this ancient settlement is an exciting experience for tourists interested in lifestyles of former populations.

Serra San Bruno

Serra San Bruno is located in the centre of the Serre in a landscape of forests, cornfields, and meadows. The picturesque city has been built against a hillside. You can already see the impressive monastery, the Certosa, from a distance. The city grew, probably from the 12th century, around Cerosa and belonged to that until about 1765. Because of this you can get an insight into what the life and activities were of the monks who have lived here through the centuries.

Scilla

Even though Scilla is the most famous place of the Costa Viola, it is still a picturesque, friendly fishing village, sandwiched between two bays. On the rocks, high above the sea, you can find a castle, Castello di Ruffo. Scilla is also the hub for catching sword fish. Also nice to visit is the fishing district Chianalea, which has been built so closely to the water that with stormy weather the waves reach as far as the doors of the houses.

Parco Nazionale dell' Aspromonte

The most southern part of Calabria has the mountains of the Aspromonte as its core. The highest peaks reach almost to 2000 metre. It is a rough and lonely natural area of great beauty, devoid of cities and passable roads. In the Aspromonte you can find small villages where they still speak a variant on the classic Greek.

Gerace

Gerace is located 500 metres high in the north east foothills of the Aspromonte Mountains. Even in the high season it is relatively peaceful here. The city has probably been established in the 10th century, when the villagers of the lower situated village Locri, because of raids by the Turks, fled uphill. High on the slope you can find medieval houses, lovely restored churches and archways. Here you can buy, among other, ceramic manufactured by craftsmen in ancient workshops.

There are two reasons to visit Stilo: for the beautiful landscape or to visit the small, yet famous Byzanthian church Cattolica. From the Cattolica you will have an amazing view of the old core of the village and the Stilara gulch. The Cattolica was built by Basilican monks in the 10th century. The symmetrical complex with four small domes and one big dome in the middle looks like similar buildings on the Peloponnesos, in Armenia and Anatolia.

Reggio di Calabria

Reggio is the capital city of the same-named province and also the most important and biggest city in Calabria. The city was hit by earthquakes several times. The heaviest took place in 1908 which is when the Messina got destroyed and a lot of historic buildings collapsed. From the boulevard you can look over the sea and across the sea you can even see Sicily. The dome was rebuilt in neo-Roman style in the beginning of the 20th century after the earthquake; it definitely deserves a closer look. Most visitors find the two metre high bronze statue of Riace to be the most important attraction of the city. These statues were found more than thirty years ago off the coast if Riace and now take their place in Reggio’s museum.

Aeolian Islands

When the weather is good we recommend you to take a boat trip around the Aeolian Islands. These islands are located between Calabria and Sicilia, about 60 km off the Calabrese coast. The Aeolian Islands consist of seven small volcanic islands with Stromboli as the most famous island. Not only does the island have the typical form of a crater, it is also a very active volcano. Approximately every 40 minutes it has outbursts. This is of course visible better at night and in the evening. Therefore in the summer, special boat trips are organised to see this spectacle from a closer look. But the other islands also have their own character. Lipari, for instance, is the biggest island with a beautiful old city and beautiful nature. The island Vulcano is an island with sulphur springs.

Beaches

Santa Maria: near the village Santa Maria you can find the same-named beach, which has a lot of facilities.
Tono: Tono is the biggest beach of the Capo Vaticano. The name Tono comes from the Italian word for tuna ‘tonno’, because in the past people caught a lot of tuna here. Even in July and August it is quite peaceful here and with enough parking spaces.
Formicoli: the beach of Formicoli is located between Capo Vaticano and Santa Domenica. Mainly the local people visit this beach. It is never overcrowded, so it is always easy staying there in the high season.
Grotticelle: Grotticelle is the most famous beach of Capo Vaticano and it consists of two bays. In the high season it can be very crowded here. In spring it is a lot quieter, but you will never be alone on the beach.
Le Spiagiette: Le Spiagette is the most beautiful beach of the whole region, it is, however, not easily accessible because there is no road heading that way. You can get there walking (from some of our accommodation facilities) via a private path that leads down steeply, or by boat from, for example, Groticelle.

Calabria

Calabria is located in the outmost south-west of Italy (the toe of the Italian boot) and offers things for everybody. The elongated region borders the Tyrrhenian and the Ionic Sea and has history and culture that dates back to 3.000 years ago. During your holiday in Calabria you can enjoy the typical Calabrese ambience. It will be a trip through history, full of beautiful nature and unusual habits. Calabria is the region that offers something new for everybody, even for the most travelled tourist.

The strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean world has led to the fact that it has been occupied by a lot of people. All the conquerors have marked their stamp on Calabria, and that is still notable. Their influences are to be found back into the culture, the history, the language, the gastronomy, the traditions and the habits. Even the people themselves are marked by it.

Despite the countless raids that Calabria has endured, the people have always stayed hospitable. Everywhere you go, you can be dragged off the streets by strangers to get offered coffee, biscuits, wine and “friselle” (a type of flat bread, covered with paprika and olive oil). And so we have even more typical Calabrese dishes. We advise you to take your time with the food, because many typical Calabrese dishes are often spicy and are a true feast. Try the salami and fish dishes and enjoy the Cirò wines.

The nature parks Monte Pollino, Sila and Aspromonte offer alternating landscapes and will definitely please nature lovers. Next to the awe-inspiring nature with mountains up to 2.100 metres, the region also has a 780 kilometre long coastline to offer its visitors. The time and sea have caused the coast to be very diverse. Steep cliffs with small idyllic sand beaches mark the Tyrrhenian coast around Tropea and Capo Vaticano.

But also the Ionic coast is worth the visit. Not only because of the many beaches and lovely coastal cities, but also because of the interesting archaeological remnants of settlements from the “Magna Graecia” age. Also a visit to the city Reggio Calabria, with its bronze statues of Riace, cannot be missed when you are in Calabria.

Make a trip through these green regions and taste the typical Calabrian Ambience. This will be a trip through history, loaded with beautiful nature and unusual habits. Calabria is a region that has something to offer for everybody, even for the most travelled tourist.

Grazie

We gaan actie ondernemen.

Beautiful holiday home; gorgeous view

We have been renting holiday homes for over 20 years, and this was one of the best. The house is airy and spacious with fully stocked kitchen, large bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms; lovely outdoor patio and dining area. The guest house adjacent is great for additional use. The pool is spectacular. It has a large deck area with top-notch chairs & umbrellas. Also, this was the only house we ever rented that had beach equipment - umbrellas, towels, snorkeling equipment, etc. Ground staff and/or gardener come by almost daily, so if ever there is a problem (which there hardly ever was,) you could address it with them, and the issue was solved immediately. Had a fantastic holiday. We highly recommend this property.

This house was perfect for us (two couples) with two ensuite bedrooms, modern bathrooms and a nice kitchen/living room opening onto good outdoor spaces. The kitchen was well equipped (especially liked the bean to cup coffee machine). Unlike other villas we've had where the kitchen was stripped bare of 'essentials' left by other guests, this one was generous, with salt, oil, balsamic vinegar etc all there and the hosts gave us a bottle of wine, and there were plenty of cooking knives, tea towels, and all sorts of useful cooking equipment. There were a stack of beach towels, bags and umbrellas too. All in all it was the most generously equipped villa we've ever had. The views were stunning. Outdoor pool nice for a cool off. The only thing we'd have liked better was closer access to the beach - you could cut through the Blue Bay Hotel access road but it was still a 15 minute walk with a stiff climb on the way home. Do-able for a day on the beach but not so practical for a quick morning sea swim. Trattoria di Mimmo just a 10 minute walk away serves excellent pizza at great value, with amazing views of Stromboli.
